Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in San Antonio, TX

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by persistent obsessions and compulsions, leaving those affected feeling trapped by their own thoughts and urges. At Serenity Mental Health Centers, our goal is to support our patients in mastering their OCD symptoms, enabling a smoother path through life. If you're grappling with OCD's challenging symptoms, contact our San Antonio, TX office for support.

Multiple approaches are available for managing OCD, with prescription medication being among the most prevalent. Additionally, we provide alternatives like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine therapy, which can be excellent substitutes for those experiencing adverse effects from medication.

TMS is a noninvasive procedure utilizing magnetic pulses to target the brain area linked to OCD, while ketamine therapy, administered intravenously, has been shown to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Regardless of the chosen method, our team is committed to supporting every patient in discovering a treatment plan that suits their needs.

OCD is thought to develop from a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental elements. Research indicates that disruptions in the brain's architecture and functionality, particularly in regions tasked with anxiety management and impulse control, may play a critical role in the onset of OCD. A family history of OCD or other psychiatric disorders also raises the likelihood of developing this condition.

Symptoms of OCD are generally marked by continuous, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that provoke substantial anxiety and result in ritualistic behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at alleviating this distress. Typical symptoms of OCD include:

Obsessions:

  • Apprehension about contamination or germs
  • Fear of self-injury or harming others
  • Compulsion for orderliness and symmetry
  • Persistent thoughts involving violence or socially unacceptable conduct

Compulsions:

  • Obsessive cleaning or excessive hand-washing
  • Frequent checking of items (e.g., doors, appliances)
  • Organizing items in a precise manner
  • Engaging in repeated mental sequences (e.g., reciting specific phrases)

I’m so glad to have found Dr. Lundmark! Actually, all the Serenity staff members have always been kind and helpful. Dr. Lundmark is very easy to talk to, and actually respects my input regarding my treatment. That was not the case with multiple doctors I’d seen in the past. I absolutely recommend Dr. Lundmark and Serenity for anyone searching for a mental health practitioner.

Mental health is never a fun subject to have to come to terms with or understand but with Serenity, Victoria my TMS tech and Dr. Norman I have come to know that life is better when we allow ourselves to heal, and use the resources available to get help. This year I reached my lowest low but with the support of serenity and my TMS treatments with Victoria, I was able to learn healthy coping mechanisms, grounding techniques, how to be nicer to myself and helped every day tasks not feel so heavy. I cannot begin to express the gratitude, appreciation and admiration I have for Victoria and how she pours her heart into everyone she encounters, I truly believe the companionship she offered brought me back everyday, we laughed, cried, complained and reflected on my life a lot together. Even while Victoria was on a much deserved vacation Ash was an absolute ray of sunshine to encounter. I never doubted I was in good hands at Serenity, everyone is so personable, helpful and caring for their patients wellbeing. I do and will continue to recommend Serenity, TMS, Dr. Norman and Victoria to anyone I know who could benefit from their services.

OCD is diagnosed through an extensive evaluation by our board-certified psychiatrists. The diagnosis process typically includes a detailed clinical interview that examines the individual's symptoms, historical background, and overall mental health. We specifically look for signs of obsessions—persistent, unwanted thoughts — and compulsions — repetitive behaviors or mental rituals performed to reduce anxiety. The assessment often involves the use of questionnaires or rating scales to gauge the severity of these symptoms. This rigorous diagnostic method ensures accurate identification of the disorder and facilitates the development of a personalized treatment plan suited to the individual’s needs.
